Route

San Jose , Pacuare, Arenal Volcano NP, Monteverde

This eight-day itinerary is built for travelers who want Costa Rica's wildest side, moving through four distinct ecosystems in a single trip. You'll open with a brief stop in San José before two days deep in the rainforest along the Pacuare River, running Class III–IV whitewater rapids and waking to genuine jungle isolation. From there, Arenal brings a twilight hanging-bridges tour and a horseback ride to La Fortuna Waterfall, before the trip closes in Monteverde's misty cloud forest, with a coffee and sugar cane farm tour and a guided walk through one of the world's most biodiverse reserves. It's an adventure-forward route that trades beach time for rapids, canopy walks, and genuine wilderness immersion.

Itinerary

Day
1

Day 1: Welcome to San José

You land at Juan Santamaría International Airport and a private transfer carries you into San José, Costa Rica's capital, set in the Central Valley and ringed by volcanic mountains. Depending on your arrival time, there's room to explore downtown a little — the National Theater's ornate 19th-century interior is worth a look, and a traditional Costa Rican meal is an easy, low-key way to ease into the trip. San José blends colonial-era architecture with a genuinely modern energy, and while it's a brief stop before the wilder legs ahead, it's a good place to get your bearings before the country's landscapes take over.

Day
2

Day 2: Whitewater on the Pacuare River

Today you travel deep into the rainforest to one of the world's most celebrated rafting rivers, the Pacuare. The journey itself is part of the experience — a winding route into increasingly remote jungle terrain, ending at a lodge accessible only by river. By afternoon, you're on the water, navigating Class III–IV rapids through steep, densely forested canyons that few travelers ever see up close. It's a genuinely thrilling introduction to the region's wilderness. Back at the lodge, the evening settles into something much quieter — no roads, no lights beyond the property, just the sound of the river and the forest around it.

Day
3

Day 3: A Day Immersed in Pacuare's Wilderness

Wake to the sound of the rainforest and spend the day taking in Pacuare's remarkable biodiversity at a slower pace than yesterday's rapids. Guided nature walks reveal toucans, monkeys, and brightly colored frogs along the riverbanks, and depending on what the lodge offers that day, there may be a canopy tour or a chance to connect with a nearby local community. This is about as remote as the trip gets, and it's worth letting that sink in — there's real value in a full day with no agenda beyond the forest itself. Spend the evening unwinding at the lodge before tomorrow's transfer to Arenal.

Day
4

Day 4: Into Arenal, and a Twilight Walk Among the Treetops

After breakfast, a private transfer carries you to the Arenal region, home to Costa Rica's most recognizable volcano. Once settled in, the day builds toward an evening adventure: a twilight tour of a hanging bridges park, where suspended walkways carry you through the rainforest canopy just as nocturnal wildlife starts to stir. It's a genuinely different way to experience a tropical forest — the same trees and bridges you might walk by day transform entirely after dark, with a chorus of insects and the occasional rustle of something moving just out of sight. A memorable, slightly eerie close to the day.

Day
5

Day 5: Horseback to La Fortuna Waterfall

A guided horseback ride today winds through Arenal's countryside, past small farms and stretches of lush greenery, en route to La Fortuna Waterfall. At 230 feet, the falls are one of the region's signature sights, and the trail down to its base rewards you with a swim in the crystal-clear pool beneath the cascade. It's a full, active morning, best followed by a slower afternoon — return to Arenal and settle into one of the area's natural hot springs, letting the heat work on any soreness from the ride. A fitting, restorative close to your time near the volcano.

Day
6

Day 6: Coffee & Sugar Cane in the Highlands of Monteverde

After breakfast, a private transfer climbs into Monteverde's misty highlands, a noticeably cooler and greener landscape than Arenal's lowland rainforest. In the afternoon, a guided visit to a working coffee and sugar cane farm walks you through the traditional methods still used to cultivate and process both crops, with a tasting of freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee along the way. It's a hands-on look at an agricultural tradition that runs deep in the country's identity, and Monteverde's cool climate and rich volcanic soil explain why the region produces some of Costa Rica's most sought-after coffee.

Day
7

Day 7: Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve

A private guided walk through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve introduces you to one of the most ecologically significant landscapes in the country — mist-shrouded trails threading through old-growth forest with an extraordinary density of species. Keep an eye out for the resplendent quetzal, a genuinely striking bird that draws birders from around the world, along with howler monkeys and hundreds of native orchid varieties tucked into the canopy. Monteverde's reputation for conservation is well earned, and the reserve makes that immediately obvious. Spend the afternoon at leisure — a local butterfly garden or simply the mountain quiet are both worth your time.

Day
8

Day 8: Departure Day

After a final breakfast, a private transfer takes you to either San José's Juan Santamaría Airport or Liberia's Daniel Oduber International Airport for your flight home, depending on routing. Looking back, the range covered in eight days is considerable — whitewater rapids through remote canyons, a nighttime walk through rainforest canopy, horseback riding to a waterfall, and misty cloud forest trails thick with birdlife. Few itineraries pack this much genuine wilderness and cultural texture into a single trip, and Costa Rica's variety is very much the point.
