Drive through winding mountain roads to Imlil, a picturesque village at the foot of Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak, taking in panoramic views of terraced fields and walnut groves along the way. Take a guided walk through nearby Berber villages, visiting a local home for mint tea and insight into traditional mountain life, before a leisurely lunch amid the peaks. Day 3: Over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass to Ouarzazate

Depart Marrakech and travel east through the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka Pass, winding between rugged peaks and valleys. Along the way, stop at scenic viewpoints and local argan oil cooperatives. By midday, arrive at Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site famed for its ancient earthen ksar and its role in films like Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Explore the maze-like alleys and climb to the top for panoramic desert views. After lunch, continue a short distance to Ouarzazate, known as the "Gateway to the Sahara" and home to the Atlas Film Studios, where you check in for a two-night stay. The golden light over the surrounding hills captures the transition from mountain majesty to desert mystery.

Day 4: Skoura Oasis & the Dades Valley

Spend the day exploring the country around Ouarzazate, beginning with a visit to the Atlas Film Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. Continue through the Skoura Oasis, where palm groves and ancient fortresses dot the landscape, and stop at Kasbah Amridil, one of Morocco's most beautifully preserved mudbrick fortresses. Follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs toward the Dades Valley, marveling at the winding gorge, dramatic rock formations and breathtaking vistas along the canyon walls. Enjoy lunch with valley views before the return drive to Ouarzazate for a second night. The Dades Valley captures the rugged romance of Morocco's wild heart, all within a single day's loop.

Day 5: Todra Gorge to Merzouga — Gateway to the Sahara

After breakfast, journey deeper into Morocco's interior toward Todra Gorge, where towering cliffs rise nearly 1,000 feet on either side. Take a short walk along the canyon floor before continuing toward Erfoud and Rissani, ancient trading towns marking the edge of the desert. By afternoon, arrive in Merzouga, gateway to the golden Erg Chebbi Dunes. Trade your vehicle for camels and ride across the sand as the sun dips below the horizon, turning the dunes crimson and gold. Spend the night in a luxury desert camp, enjoying a traditional Moroccan dinner under a canopy of stars. Music, firelight and the stillness of the Sahara create a truly unforgettable first night in the desert.

Day 6: Desert Sunrise & a Day Among the Dunes

Wake early to witness the sunrise over the Sahara, an ethereal experience as shifting dunes glow in soft morning light. After breakfast, spend the day exploring the Erg Chebbi region by 4x4, visiting a nomadic family, a working auberge, or simply relaxing at camp as the desert light shifts through the day. Optional excursions include visiting a local Gnawa music group or touring the black volcanic hills nearby. As evening falls, return to the dunes for a second sunset over the sand before another night under canvas, with dinner and music around the fire. Two full nights in the desert allow time to settle into its rhythm rather than simply passing through.

Continue back through Ouarzazate and over the Tizi n'Tichka Pass, retracing the mountain route with fresh eyes as the terrain shifts from desert plains to fertile valleys. Arrive in Marrakech by evening and check into your riad in the medina for the final two nights. It is a long day on the road, but one that ties together every landscape the journey has crossed.
