Route

Belfast, Derry, Monaghan, Dublin

Ireland tells two Halloween stories, and this nine-to-ten-night journey captures both. Beginning in Belfast and tracing the wild Antrim Coast Road past the Giant's Causeway, the journey arrives in Derry for Europe's largest Halloween festival — ancient Samhain folklore, torchlit trails, and a spectacular fireworks finale over the River Foyle. From there, the journey turns south to Dublin, the true birthplace of Dracula author Bram Stoker, where Victorian Gothic elegance replaces ancient mythology in haunted library tours, crypt banquets, and a dramatic theatrical parade. From bonfires to candlelight, banshees to Bram Stoker, this is the definitive exploration of Ireland's Halloween soul, ancient and modern, folklore and fiction, north and south.

Itinerary

Day
1

Day 1: Touchdown — A Northbound Crossing

Land in Dublin, where a private driver awaits to whisk you north across the border into Northern Ireland. The two-hour transfer unspools green countryside before delivering you into Belfast, a city defined by reinvention. Spend the afternoon exploring the Titanic Quarter, where the story of the doomed liner unfolds across an architecturally striking museum on the very slipway where she was built. As evening falls, wander the Cathedral Quarter's cobbled streets, alive with live music spilling from traditional pubs. Dinner is at one of Belfast's celebrated contemporary restaurants, where Ulster's culinary renaissance is on full display. Tonight is for easing into Northern Ireland's rhythm — a city of murals, shipyards, and quiet resilience.

Day
2

Day 2: Murals and Memory — Belfast in Depth

Spend the morning on a private tour of the Falls Road and Shankill Road murals, hearing how the city has processed and memorialized its recent history through public art. Continue to the Ulster Museum for a broader view of Northern Ireland's cultural story, or opt for a walking tour of the elegant Victorian architecture around Donegall Square and Queen's University. In the afternoon, explore St George's Market, one of Ireland's oldest covered markets, for local food and crafts. This evening, settle into a Cathedral Quarter pub for live traditional music — a second, slower night to fully absorb Belfast before tomorrow's journey west.

Day
3

Day 3: Basalt and Brine — The Antrim Coast to Derry

Depart Belfast and trace the Antrim Coast Road, one of the world's great coastal drives, with the sea on one side and dramatic glens on the other. Stop at the ruins of Dunluce Castle, perched precariously on its clifftop, before crossing the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge for sweeping views out to Rathlin Island. Continue to the Giant's Causeway, where 40,000 basalt columns rise from the Atlantic in a landscape steeped in myth and legend. From there, a short drive brings you into Derry, Ireland's only fully intact walled city and the spiritual home of Halloween. Check into your hotel this evening, with the city's ancient walls awaiting tomorrow's exploration.

Day
4

Day 4: Samhain's Roots — Derry's Folklore

Spend the day exploring Derry's deep connection to Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival from which Halloween descends. A private guided experience traces the city's folklore traditions, storytelling, and the origins of customs now celebrated worldwide. Wander the Cathedral Quarter's historic churches and atmospheric lanes, where the Awakening trail continues to transform the streets after dark with light shows, acrobats, and circus performers. Sample local food and drink at the Heart of Samhain hub in Guildhall Square. Tonight is about absorbing the city's growing energy, one night closer to the festival's spectacular climax.

Day
5

Day 5: The Walled City Ablaze — Halloween in Derry

The day the city has built toward for forty years. Spend the morning at leisure, perhaps with a private tour of the Bogside murals and Free Derry Museum for historical context. As afternoon turns to evening, the city transforms entirely — costumed revelers fill the streets, haunted buildings creak open their doors, and the Walled City becomes Europe's largest open-air Halloween stage. Witness the Carnival Parade, a procession of innovative floats and elaborate costumes winding through the city, before the night culminates in a dazzling fireworks finale lighting up the River Foyle. An unforgettable, once-in-a-generation celebration.

Day
6

Day 6: The Quiet Between — South Through the Borderlands

After the spectacle, begin the journey south. Break the drive in the Sperrin Mountains or briefly cross into County Donegal for a taste of the wild Atlantic borderlands, stopping at a working distillery for a private whiskey tasting. Continue toward the midlands, overnighting at a historic country estate en route, allowing the energy of Derry to settle before Dublin's distinct Gothic atmosphere takes hold.

Day
7

Day 7: Crossing Into Gothic Dublin

Arrive in Dublin and check into a hotel among the city's Georgian squares. Spend the afternoon at Trinity College, Stoker's alma mater, wandering the cobbled quadrangles where he studied mathematics before turning to literature. Continue to Grafton Street and its surrounding lanes, where Victorian shopfronts and elegant townhouses hint at the world that shaped his imagination. As evening falls, wander the streets around Dublin Castle and St. Stephen's Green, where the first stirrings of the festival begin to reveal themselves — flickers of theatrical spectacle and Gothic atmosphere settling over the city. Dinner nearby offers a study in contrast to Derry's ancient folklore — Dublin's supernatural comes dressed in top hats and candlelight rather than bonfires and banshees.

Day
8

Day 8: The Long Room and the Old Library

Begin at Trinity's Old Library, where the Long Room's towering oak shelves and marble busts create one of the world's most atmospheric literary spaces. Continue to Glasnevin Cemetery for a guided daylight walk through Ireland's largest burial ground. In the afternoon, browse the festival's Victorian market stalls before an evening at Smock Alley Theatre, where a site-specific gothic production unfolds inside a centuries-old playhouse.

Day
9

Day 9: Parade Night — Dublin's Final Frights

Spend the morning at Kilmainham Gaol, one of Europe's most atmospheric former prisons, its stone corridors and haunting history offering a sobering counterpoint to the festival's theatrics. In the afternoon, visit Stokerland, the festival's pop-up Victorian funfair in St. Patrick's Park, in the shadow of the cathedral. Before evening falls, secure a vantage point along O'Connell Street for the Macnas parade — a river of giant puppets, pyrotechnics, and immersive storytelling winding through the city after dark. Close the night with a final dinner in a historic Dublin setting, toasting the journey from Derry's ancient Samhain spirit to Dublin's Victorian Gothic theater.

Day
10

Day 10: Last Light — Departure

A final morning at leisure — perhaps a quiet visit to the Dublin Writers Museum, or a wander through the Georgian streets around Merrion Square. A private transfer delivers you to the airport, closing a journey that moved from Belfast's industrial grandeur through the wild Antrim coast, into Derry's ancient Samhain spirit, and finally into Dublin's Victorian Gothic elegance.
