Description

A 14th-century explorer Ibn Battuta, often dubbed the Muslim Marco Polo, declared Antalya to be one of the most beautiful cities he'd ever seen. Modern day visitors would find it hard to dispute his claim. Nestled on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean, Antalya rests on a fertile plain, framed by towering, often snow-dusted mountains. For those looking to add some cultural depth to their beach holiday, Antalya offers a dive into its ancient history. Just north of the city, the Karain cavern houses remnants of Turkey's oldest known settlement. The city’s diverse past is vividly on display, bearing the marks of the Romans, Byzantines and Seljuks. Present-day Antalya marries the charm of a modern metropolis with the quaint appeal of an old-world town. Wander into Kaleiçi to discover the authentic Antalya — an enchanting blend of petite mosques, and a mishmash of both revamped and time-worn Ottoman wooden houses. The harbour, Yat Liman, is a haven of cosy cafés and bars, where you can unwind while taking in the lively boat life in the nearby bay.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to visit Antalya is during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to November) when the weather is pleasantly warm and the tourist crowds are smaller. During these months, you can enjoy outdoor activities, explore historical sites, and relax on the beaches without the intense summer heat.

A stay of 3 to 5 days in Antalya is ideal to explore the main attractions, enjoy the beaches, and take day trips to nearby historical sites. This allows time to visit the Old Town (Kaleiçi), the ancient city of Perge, and the Düden Waterfalls, while also experiencing the local culture and cuisine.

Must-see attractions in Antalya include the Old Town (Kaleiçi) with its narrow streets and Ottoman-era architecture, the ancient Roman harbor, and the Antalya Museum. Don't miss the Düden Waterfalls and the nearby ancient ruins of Perge and Aspendos, famous for its well-preserved Roman theater.

Getting around Antalya is convenient with options like the modern tram system, buses, and taxis. For exploring the Old Town, walking is the best way to soak in the atmosphere. Renting a car is recommended if you plan to visit sites outside the city, such as the ancient ruins or the beautiful beaches along the coast.

In Antalya, try local dishes such as 'piyaz' (a bean salad with tahini), 'tahini piyaz', and 'göce tarhanası' (a type of bulgur soup). Seafood is also popular due to the coastal location, with grilled fish and calamari being local favorites. Don't forget to taste the Antalya-style 'baklava' for dessert.

Antalya hosts several cultural events and festivals, including the Antalya International Film Festival in October, which is one of the oldest film festivals in Turkey. The Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival, held in the ancient Aspendos Theater, is another highlight, offering a unique cultural experience.

Popular day trips from Antalya include visiting the ancient city of Perge, exploring the ruins of Termessos, and seeing the stunning landscapes of the Köprülü Canyon National Park. Another option is a boat trip to the nearby Düden Waterfalls or a visit to the charming town of Side with its ancient ruins and beautiful beaches.
